My First Blogging Challenge

I’m a high school teacher who is teaching an ELL Composition and Writing class. I was told about the Student Blogging Challenge by my principal. One of the big things in my classes is I want the learning experience to be as authentic as possible. I want students to feel like they’re doing something that’s useful, rather than just another assignment that’s required for a grade. I hoped that having a broader audience for their work would encourage them to put their heart into writing as I do.

Highlights: The topics for the student blogging challenge were very well chosen. They were quite broad for my application. Giving my students too many choices confuses them. But I could always find one or two topics that were intriguing. I would then present the one or two choices to my students, rather than the whole blog post. I particularly liked when we described our country. We made slideshow videos and the students recorded narration for them. Since most of the audience has never been to Taiwan, I thought they would find it interesting. The holidays also produced interesting posts, as Chinese cultural holidays are very different from western ones. We ended up writing Limericks for one, but I can’t remember if that was even part of the challenge. One of our students got a huge number of comments about his because it was featured. I really appreciate Kathleen featuring several of our posts, because it really attracted a lot more traffic and interest.

Comments and Interactions: I appreciate the effort at the start to teach the students to make good comments. As I mentioned, we got a bunch of hilarious comments about the limericks. Those were genuine. I did feel like a lot of the commenters were directed to do so by their teachers and didn’t really care about the blog. They would always post a link to their blog. I visited many of them, but I felt like it was just a plan to get more traffic. Most of those blogs were not of a high quality either.

Suggestions: I know that a lot of planning and work goes into this process. Kathleen and whoever else was involved did an excellent job keeping things organized.

I like the concept of class blogs, but I had a bit of trouble with those features on the website. The students who made their own blogs, were never properly added into my class. Other students were posting directly to my class blog, which is fine. I ended up linking in half the class and the other half were on my blog. I understand that Word Press is a well-respected platform, but I don’t really like the interface. I use it for my school’s website, and I don’t find it intuitive, even though I do a lot of tech stuff. Next time, I’ll use Google’s Blogger because it’s much easier to navigate and use. I spent a huge amount of time at the start of the semester teaching students to use the platform.

My other suggestion is for other teachers. It seemed like they didn’t really know how to help the students produce a quality blog. I understand that a lot of teachers have so many students in their classes that they can’t give constructive criticism and help, but a lot of the blogs I looked at were clearly done as an assignment and didn’t seem ready for a broader audience. I do understand the challenges teachers face, though, with time and resources.

Conclusion: Thank you to Kathleen and all the others who went out of their way to make this experience one of learning and fun. I think it’s a great idea and I’ll be doing it in the future if I’m teaching a class in this area of study. I believe that this is the direction we need to go in education, authentic learning opportunities with real-world skills and application.

My end of blogging challenge

Jerry’s Reflection

I have done at least 10 blogs. Everytime I write a blog I like it very much but always have a new problem or question with me. I will always solve it. In this time, I important learn is go look other people blog. Learn what did they write and how can I imitate. Also, I learned how can I give a good comment. I very liked the Limerick Brain freeze challenge. Because this is very fun and the comments I received all write “Wow, your ideas are very cool, this poem I like it.” This is my favorite challenge.

Every time I got comments, I was laughing. The comments were very funny. When I give the comments I will think funnily is good, bad, will it hurt too much. So I will go check again. I haven’t seen any blog I like a lot so far, just a few blogs I found interesting.

I think I will improve writing. In the future, I will write more interesting and make a blog beautiful. I think will also give more comment to other people.

I enjoyed this chance to post my blog. I like it. I will go back to see my blog and comment again. I wish next time I can do better, get more interesting and learn more. Posting blogs are very fun!!

Contrast TAIS to Previous School

Today, I want to talk about contrast TAIS to Previous School.

I’m 9 grade at Taiwan Adventist International School. As you may have guessed from the name, it’s a Christian American international school located in the mountains of central Taiwan.

Here are some things I’ve noticed where it differs from Taiwanese schools. The study method is different. We use computer apps to enhance English, making powerpoint or do the paragraph, but in Taiwan’s schools, all the students only use books.

In Taiwan Adventist International School, we just focus on English and practice English grammar. The teachers are a little different from Taiwan’s. The teachers speak English with us because it can make our English better.

Next, I will talk about dorm life. Some students live in the dorm because it will be more convenient. My friends and I have more time to understand each other.

I am happy here because I make a lot of friends and the teachers are kind. Before I study at TAIS, my  English is terrible and I speak English only have a little time. But now, my English is progressing.

Compare/Contrast TAIS to Previous School

I’m in 10 grade at Taiwan Adventist International School. As you may have guessed from the name, it’s a Christian American international school located in the mountains of central Taiwan. Here are five things I’ve noticed where it differs from Taiwanese schools.

1. In TAIS cafeteria is eat vegetarian. Taiwanese school we eat meat at every meal. (we called nutritious meal)

2. In TAIS just have 5 periods, and the lunch break is long. Taiwanese school has 8 periods even 9, and the lunch break also short. It is very tiring.

3. TAIS need to use a computer to do the homework in class or dorm. Taiwanese school just use book or paper. Not too many projects.

4. TAIS teachers are all foreigners just a few is Taiwanese. and the teachers are personable. Taiwanese school teacher will only tell you to finish what you have to do. (Is very boring)

5. TAIS does not have many students, so I can’t make many good friends. Taiwanese school most are greater than 500 people, so making friends is easy.

Taiwan

Hello! Today I want to talk about Taiwan!

Taiwan is a beautiful country. In Taiwan, people are friendly, and the foods are delicious. If you need some help and everyone will try their best to help you. All the view are so nice and beautiful in Taiwan!

Favorite Holiday(Chinese New Year)

My favorite holiday is the Chinese New Year. Our family will do a lot of thing at that time. This break is very long.

First, we will go to our old home to worship.

We will take a long time to drive.

We will wake up early.

so the first day is a tired day.

Second, my aunt will cook lunch.

I anticipate her food because it is very yummy.

She will cook, chicken, bamboo shoots, and fish (kind of thing)  as a part of worship.

So this is our reunion dinner

Next, the second day.

We will go to the temple and the uncle’s home.

We go to the temple just to pray for safety and eat their food.

At night, uncle will cook a lot of food for us, and we will eat together, and drink little liqueur.

Next, we will go to my grandma’s home, we also go there to eat.

But we will go to the night market, and I will go to buy a firecracker.

And there have to play firecracker place, every year I will go play, it is very fun.

Finally, the last few days of vacation.

We travel with our family.

I  like this travel because it is can help me relax.

And every time we travel we can eat many delicious foods.

Every trip can help me know more places, also help me promote family feelings.

I very like the Chinese New Year.

Every Chinese New Year always has many foods.

I feel very happy.

Because it can help people’s mood getting better.

I always look forward to this Holiday.

Christmas in Taiwan

Today, I want to talk about Christmas in Taiwan.

It is my favorite holiday because I can see all of the children are so happy and have fun with his friends and family. You can see there are many children are playing at the park, on the street or anywhere in Taiwan.

My dad always gives gifts to me and my little brother or I will play with my friends to exchange gifts. I will feel nervous and look forward to this before I do this. Because of this, I look forward to the arrival of Christmas every day.

All my family will watch Christmas movies or made Christmas cookies together. My mom thinks this can increase the tacit understanding between family members.

The reason I like Christmas the most is the weather is cold. Although there is no way to play in the snow in Taiwan, the temperature is just right.

At Taiwan’s Christmas Eve, You can see much lights on the street because Taiwanese feel that there is a lot of fun in it.
